Abstract

The definition of “compound verb” in the Persian language has always been a contentious issue among linguists, with numerous studies in recent years examining and critiquing it from morphological, syntactic, and semantic perspectives. This research compares examples of compound verbs in the Afghan Persian dialects with the standard Iranian Persian. It aims to illustrate the differences and similarities in the structure and usage of these verbs between the two varieties. The research data was collected through interviews with Afghan students pursuing their studies at the International Branch of Birjand University. The findings indicate that in some instances, a compound verb common in Afghan Persian is rendered by a different compound verb in standard Iranian Persian, while in other cases, the equivalent is a simple verb. Conversely, the opposite situation is also observed. The results of this study suggest that a comparative analysis of compound verbs in these two dialects can contribute to a clearer understanding of the morphological and syntactic boundaries of this verb category, as well as a more precise recognition of dialectal variations within Persian.
