Keywords:
Shahnameh, Ferdowsi, cultural components, Pahlavi periodAbstract
The present study examines the popular beliefs and folk traditions in the heroic era of the Shahnameh, based on the assumption that popular beliefs occupy a special place in the Shahnameh and reflect the intellectual system of Iranians of that period. The aim of the research is to strengthen the identity of a nation and to expand readers’ awareness of the popular beliefs of the 10th century. The research method is library-based. The most important finding of the study is that Ferdowsi employed elements of folk culture, in accordance with the situation and context, to express his ideas. The Shahnameh is the national epic narrating the bravery of a nation and is filled with ideals, aspirations, customs, and historical and cultural events. Since popular beliefs and folk traditions are considered a part of the culture of Persian literature and have played a significant role in the growth and development of cultural communities over centuries, familiarity with and awareness of the culture and customs of a nation’s past seems essential for those interested in the national identity and historical background of their homeland.
