Abstract

This article analyzes the reflection of Iranian folk beliefs in the Shahnameh with particular reference to the four classical elements. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method, and its data were collected through library research and scientific documents available on academic research websites. The findings indicate that Ferdowsi consistently paid particular attention to the beliefs of Zoroastrians and ancient Iranians and expressed several important aspects of his religious worldview with reference to ancient beliefs. One of the shared features between folk beliefs and the Shahnameh concerning the four elements is the influence of fire on the behavior and actions of characters. Fire sometimes functions as a means of appeasing anger and, at other times, symbolizes courage and valor. Water also plays a significant role both in folk beliefs and in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. It is employed in association with concepts such as life-giving power, honor and social reputation, the origin of creation, and other related themes. Overall, numerous similarities exist between the folk beliefs reflected in the Shahnameh and those commonly held among the Iranian people. As the most significant work of Persian epic literature, Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh incorporates a number of Iranian beliefs concerning the four classical elements. In this respect, the Shahnameh itself has sometimes served as one of the most important sources of Iranian folk beliefs and has played a significant role in raising public awareness of these traditions.
