The critique and analysis of Persian poetry and discourse from rhetorical perspectives—including bayān (figures of expression), ma‘ānī (semantics), and badī‘ (figures of embellishment)—and, more broadly, the examination of the diverse aspects of Persian literary expression through a rhetorical lens, are referred to as aesthetics. When engaging in analysis from the perspective of bayān, one illustrates the various manifestations of simile, metonymy, allusion, metaphor, and symbolism. Likewise, when discussing poetry through the lens of ma‘ānī and rhetorical embellishments, or even when explicating the prosodic meters of verses, all such approaches fall within the domain of aesthetic analysis. The aim of this study is to conduct an aesthetic critique of Saif Farghani’s odes from rhetorical, literary, and artistic perspectives. Saif Farghani, a prominent and outspoken Persian poet and critic of the 13th century CE, despite being a contemporary of Saadi and having migrated to Asia Minor, has not been adequately recognized in proportion to his poetic stature, notwithstanding his refined temperament, effective expression, delicate taste, original and engaging poetry, and incisive critical language. This study seeks to introduce the aesthetic qualities of Saif Farghani’s odes to the reader; accordingly, it examines the structural aesthetics of his odes and explicates their rhetorical, literary, and stylistic devices, as well as their novel and elegant linguistic subtleties. Furthermore, it presents the rhetorical layers and devices that play a significant role in the aesthetics of his odes, based on their frequency of usage. The analyses indicate that Saif’s odes are replete with rhetorical figures and imaginative imagery. Both phonetic and semantic rhetorical devices—such as paronomasia, personification, takhallos (signature verse), allusion, parallelism, and others—occur with very high frequency. It is difficult to identify any rhetorical or stylistic device that has not been employed repeatedly in Saif’s odes. The findings suggest that, in terms of frequency, Saif makes the greatest use of phonetic rhetorical devices such as paronomasia, parallelism, takhallos, genitive chaining, quotation (inclusion), and alliteration. Among semantic devices, allusion, personification, antithesis, semantic harmony, and hyperbole are notable. In addition, expressive devices such as simile, irony, metaphor, and metonymy are extensively and effectively employed in the aesthetic construction of his odes.
