The Interconnection of Mysticism and Resistance in the Poetry of Hossein Esrafili

One of the prominent elements in the structure of Persian poetry and literature is mysticism, which can be regarded as an inseparable component of Persian literary tradition, particularly in poetic literature. It has been present throughout most periods of Persian literature, and its traces extend into contemporary poetry and literary works, such that its manifestations can still be observed in modern texts. Mystical themes, especially following the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988), penetrated more deeply into the minds and thoughts of poets and writers. One of the poets whose work has acquired a mystical tone is Hossein Esrafili, who has successfully integrated his poetry—often characterized by themes of resistance and perseverance—with mystical elements and symbols, thereby creating an elevated and aesthetically refined thematic dimension. Esrafili, who is considered a representative figure of Sacred Defense poetry, has employed his poetry in service of the ideals of the Revolution and in articulating the epics, bravery, and self-sacrifice of national soldiers. He has merged many themes such as the Revolution, the Sacred Defense, struggle, and resistance with mystical motifs including martyrdom, love, quest, longing, hope, altruism, patience, ecstasy, and spiritual madness. Through this synthesis, he has established a profound and aesthetically compelling connection between mystical teachings and the elements of resistance literature. This article aims to explicate the mystical components present in the resistance-oriented poetry of Hossein Esrafili.
